Bowen’s Disease Case Study
This is a real case presented at Key Health CBD South in 2022
Patient: 67 years old, male
Symptoms: Presents with a scaly rash on the left cheek
Investigation: Biopsy with a 2mm punch under local anaesthetic
Diagnosis: Bowen's disease (also known as squamous cell carcinoma in situ)
What is it? Bowen’s disease is a very early form of skin cancer arising from the top or squamous layer of the skin. If left untreated, a significant minority may develop into invasive cancer which requires surgery.
Management: Options include cryotherapy, medical cream therapy, curettage/cautery or even possibly observation in the elderly.
