This is a real case presented at Key Health CBD South in 2022

Patient: 78 years old, female

Symptoms: Presents with a strange rash on both inner thighs

Investigation: Clinical diagnosis

Diagnosis: Erythema ab igne (EAI)

What is it? EAI is also known as hot water bottle rash. It is a skin condition caused by chronic exposure to infrared radiation or heat. Typically caused by hot water bottles or laptops resting on the skin. Heat insufficient to cause a direct burn causes a mild reticular or lattice-like rash. It can happen across all age groups.

Management: Avoidance of the cause is the mainstay of treatment. It often will fade but may take months to years to do so. Laser or topical creams may be required to assist in the improvement of the appearance.

Medical checks, dermatological reviews and laser treatments are performed regularly at Key Health Sydney CBD South.
